What is CRM?(Customer Relationship Management), ask 1,000 people and you'll probably get 999 different answers.
CRM was first introduced in the early 90's purely as a piece of software. The biggest problem we have today is the majority of people looking for a CRM still think it's only a piece of software. Buy an off the shelf CRM, install it in their sales force and all their problems will disappear
Wrong, as I said in the first paragraph ask 1000 people and get 999 different answers because people don't know exactly what they want from a CRM
This make's it difficult because if you don't know what you want from a CRM how will a software writer. He will assume what you want, based on IT bells and whistles but will seldom get it right. How can they? Most IT developers have never even seen a sales department and yet they have the answer to your problems. Most people who have bought an off the shelf CRM software package will only use about 35% of its capabilities. Because:
1) Most of the bells & whistles do not help your sales team at all
2) The CRM supplier makes money out of customising the software, so the basic platform is a one size fits all, how can that help you deliver better processes to your sales team.
Before you buy a CRM you must have a sales process installed in your sales team. It's no good buying CRM software then developing a sales process to fit the software. You'll be surprised at how many sales managers have done this.
